A secret key giving full control over the funds at an address. Whoever knows the private key owns the coins. Never share it.

A private key gives full control over the funds at an address — it is effectively ownership of the coins. It must never be shared, entered on dubious sites or stored in plain text online. A legitimate exchange does not need your private key: if someone asks for it, it is fraud.
