Cold and hot wallets: where to store crypto

Where to keep crypto depends on the amount and how often you use it. The main split is between hot and cold wallets. Let's see what to choose for the task.

Hot wallet

Connected to the internet: a mobile or desktop app, an exchange wallet, a browser extension. Convenient for frequent operations and exchange, but higher risk: hacking, viruses, phishing.

For: operational amounts you transfer or exchange often.

Cold wallet

Stores keys offline: a hardware wallet (device) or paper. Practically unreachable for remote hacking, but less convenient for quick operations.

For: large amounts «in storage» you don't touch daily.

A practical rule

  • Small «for exchange» amounts — on a hot wallet.
  • Large savings — on a cold one.
  • Never keep everything on an exchange: access can be limited, and you don't control the keys.

What to protect first

Not the wallet itself, but the seed phrase and private key. Whoever knows the seed owns the coins. Keep it offline (on paper/metal), share it with no one, don't photograph it to the cloud.

Common mistakes

  • A screenshot of the seed phrase in the phone gallery / cloud.
  • Entering the seed on suspicious sites (phishing).
  • Keeping the whole amount on a hot wallet or exchange.

In short

  • Hot — convenient and risky (operational amounts); cold — safe (storage).
  • Protect the seed phrase and key, not the app.
  • Don't keep all funds on an exchange.

On exchange safety — AML check. Terms — in the glossary.
